Change brought by agriculture

November 29, 2010

Mina Tamang is a resident of Baluwapati. She has 5 members in her family including father and mother in law, her husband and one son. The only source of income for Mina's family is   agricultural but they couldn't earn for living through agricultural due to traditional farming (maize, millet and paddy) and degradation of the soil quality. They had no idea about growing vegetable and had to purchase. So they often missed vegetable in their food. This caused their children malnutrition. Mina and her husband had no idea to maintain the quality of soil and make income from agricultural production.

In the year 2006, mina become member of women group and later on selected as a coordinator of the group. Her group started saving of some money and they started to grow vegetable compulsory in the group. The group also acts on improving sanitation, safe drinking water, personal hygiene and education to the girls in their community. Recognizing her and groups enthusiasm, Share and Care supported to establish a nursery for her group so that they could grow seedling of vegetable for commercial purpose. Mina and her group sells seedling and vegetable and earn Rs. 150,000 per year. She is now sharing her agricultural knowledge to other women groups of her community.

Mina and her family is happy with the income now they are making through agriculture. They have started to consume green vegetable daily and her son's health is progressing. In her word "There is nothing impossible if we really like to do. If we are dedicated, we can grow gold in our soil, I thank Share and Care for sharing new ideas on agriculture"
