November 29, 2010

Dawa Tamang, 17 years old is a resident of Haibung VDC, Ward no. 7 of Sindhupalchowk District. He is student of grade 8, studying at Shree Haibung Mahadevsthan Secondary School. He is living with his uncle, aunt and grandfather. His father died when he was 9 years old and his mother moved from the house living him alone. So his grandparents and uncle started to take care of him.

He was raised by his uncle and he has to work hard in his uncles' home because they are poor. He takes care of his uncle's child, work in the field and help in household work. His uncle moved to city to learn and drive local vehicle. He somehow manages to study up to grade 3 but he had to quit school due to increase in expenditure. When he had to quit school, he thought of going to city and he ran away with other teenagers from home to his uncle in city. His uncle was driver and was not able to take care. So he find him job as baby sitter in the city. He worked in rich man's home in city as baby sitter. At the beginning he was cared by his master, he look after his babies, cook food, wash dishes/cloth, clean house and in the rest time he was allowed to study in the school. He started his education from grade 4. After few years his master started to beat him and give him more hard work and he couldn't study at home but he manage and study up to 8th grade. When he was in his 8th grade, his master accused him for the mistakes, which he had not done and cancelled his school fee. He said "my master beat me and scold me and put pressure me to quit school. He never paid me for my job. Finally he cut down my school fees and I had to quit school. I think, it is because my school expenditure was increasing as I am progressing to higher grade. So I left that house and get back to my village"

After 4 years he returned back to village. Share and Care Nepal staff visited the houses for scholarship to poor and needy children. Dawa was identified by the team and team managed to provide him scholarship in coordination with local school. Dawa become so happy to know that he was selected for scholarship student. He showed the things he has got and said "I got school bag, stationeries, school dress and my school fees are paid by Share and Care. I have worked hard in city for these things. Now I don't have to run again and become sad for my education. I will pay this debt by studying hard. I wish all the children could study like me".
