I like to be first women chairperson of VDC

November 29, 2010

Dev Kumari Chaulagain is 33 years old and resident of Bhotechour  VDC. She got married at the age to 17 years to 46 years old men. She has 3 children and husband in her family. Her husband is 62 years old. She had no idea that she is second wife of her husband till she got married. Her husband was selected by her father; none of the family members was involved in the decision made for wedding. Her husband had daughters from his first wife so he married Dev Kumari to have son. This is common understanding in the village that women are blamed to have son or daughter and men marry second wife if first wife have number of daughter and not son.

Dev kumari had first daughter, second son and third daughter. She was not allowed to participate in social activities, decision making in the home and limited to household duties like other women in the community.

In the year 2005 Share and Care started Life Relevant Education (LRE) class in the Bhotechour, she asked her family to participate in the class but she was not allowed and after few days struggle, she could convince her family and joined LRE class. She was very happy and actively participates in the class. They form group name "Thulodunga Women's Group" in the class and she was selected as the chairperson of the group. She realized her importance and represent as women in various programs in her community. She also participated in the advocacy training for human rights, women's group capacity building, account management, candle making training, off seasonal vegetable farming training, women empowerment, gender organized by the Share and Care Nepal.

Recognizing her belonging to women empowerment, she was offered chairperson position in the women's network group of 9 women's group in the VDC. She started talking about women's problem as network representative in the community meeting, gathering and programs. The local leaders discourage her by saying "Its bad luck" for community if women talk like men but her never stop even her husband was not happy with her progress. One day her husband was in death bed due to Pneumonia, she insists her family to take to hospital rather than traditional healing. Finally she took him to hospital and saved his life. This incident changes her husband now he says that "If a woman talks it brings luck in the family".

Dev Kumari now represent in the Village Development Council program and work as a community health volunteer for HIV, STD, Family Planning and Human Trafficking for Nepal Family Planning Association. In her leisure time she makes candle and grow vegetables to sell in the local shops. She is also coordinator of women's cooperative. She earns about Rs. 5000 a month and uses this money to educate her children. When she was asked how do you feel now being a women representative of the community, she said " I feel proud to be women, represent women and uplift the lives of women in my community. LRE class and trainings organized by Share and Care is the breakthrough for my life and I will never forget the class where I struggled and this motivates me to work for my community." Further what is your dream, she answered quickly "I want to become first women Chairperson of the VDC". We wish her best. Dev Kumari is the lesson for all women who think that they are illiterate and can do nothing for the community.
