Observation Visit Changed My Life

November 29, 2010

30 years old, Indira Khatiwada is a resident of Jaisigaon, Bhotechour VDC, Ward no. 8 of Sindhupalchowk district. She is living with her daughter, son, husband, father and mother in law. She quit her study at grade seven because she couldn't pass grade seven. She got married when she was 18 years old.

Indira was one of the PRA volunteer for Share and Care in the year 2005 during PRA at Bhotechour. She was trained for conducting PRA and it was her first training in the life and first program outside her home. She joined the PRA volunteer team to learn and do something for her community, as she was interested in social work. She was also taken for observation visit to past project of Share and Care in the Pharping. She was so surprised with the women's empowerment, confidence and development. She then thought of becoming confident, involve in the social development and be respected like them.

In the year 2006, she got selected and trained to facilitate Life Relevant Education (LRE) of Share and Care at Bhotechour VDC. She formed women group called "Jaisigaon Self Help Group" and served group as secretary. In the year 2007, due to her dedication for women empowerment and development senior mothers group selected her as a Female Community Health Volunteer (FCHV). She took this opportunity to serve women in her community for betterment of their health. She was trained on various issues of health by Share and Care. This encouraged her to dedicate her service in the community. She made home visit for ANC and PNC care, she gather women in the community and market for health education, encourage mothers to immunize their children and take preventive precaution from the diseases.

In the year 2008, Share and Care facilitate to form FCHV group in Bhotechour.  She took lead and form FCHV group of 9 FCHVs, they started to collect fund for sustainability of their service and help members in hardship by revolving it as loan. she said " In the past we (FCHVs) were not united and we hardly know each other so we were like single stick, very weak now we are united, we are strong and we can serve our community more better. We now have plans and objectives for the future, even the District Health Office recognize our group and supported us Rs. 37,000 for group fund. I would like to thank Share and Care for sharing this vision and their initiation and suggestion to form this group."

She shared her personal progress "I never thought of being facilitator or community health volunteer and a women leader until I visited Pharping project of Share and Care. That observation visit changed my life, it was like turning point for me after that. I was shy now I am confident, I was nothing now I am recognized as women leader, I had no profession now I am community health volunteer. These are changes in my life, which would not be possible without Share and Care's guidance and suggestion to me and my community. Now I have plan to do progress in my profession and serve my community to improve their health with my best"
