I am Proud To Be a Member of Women Group
Urmila Chhepang (25 years old) is a resident of Hadikhola VDC of Makwanpur district. When she was young she had to work very hard to earn for living. Her mother was not healthy (often get sick) and her father was drunkard. He used to torture her badly and forced to leave the house. So she alone had to manage for living. After her mother was died, she thought about going to India for the job. She met a person, who helped her to go India and manage job. She was told that she will have better job and good pay scale in India. Therefore she left her house at the age of 15. But she lost her hope when she knew that she has been sold in the circus. She was forced to perform risky and difficult stunts in the circus. She had to work from 4 am to 11 pm . Even though, she was beaten by master for small mistakes.
After four years service in the circus, one day she got success to return her home. But she was not easily accepted by the community. So she had to suffer a lot to adjust. As time passed by, she got married with Ram Bahadur Chepang and gave birth to four children. She never expressed her opinion freely in front of the people.
Recognizing her struggle and social status, Share and Care Nepal supported her to live a meaningful life by encouraging, counseling her to be a member of the women action group in her village. She finally accepted and become a member of the group. After counseling she shared her past days with group members, which helped other members to be aware on human trafficking issues. Now the group members can understand Urmila that it is not her wish to be trafficked but it’s her problems that made her trafficked.
Urmila is now a committed member of the group and she is dedicated to protect the women and girls in her community from being trafficked. She said, “It’s better to work hard in our village rather than going abroad, I will share this message to everybody through group meeting and will not let others to be trafficked.”
