Nepal is a mountainous country situated on the southern slopes of the Himalayas. It is bordered by China in the North and India in the East, West and South. It is shaped like an irregular rectangle and the total land area is 147,181 square km. Kathmandu is the capital of Nepla. The official language is Nepali. The Interim Head of State is Girija Prasad Koirala.
The Gross domestic production is 1500$ per capita and the human development index is 0.534.
Nepal holds the unique status of being the only official Hindu state with over 80% of Nepalese as Hindus. On May 18, 2006, Nepal was declared a secular state. On December 28, 2007 the interim government declared Nepal as a Federal Democratic Republic. The current king, Gyandendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev may be the last king of Nepal as the monarchy may be abolished after the April 2008 elections.
