Population Size
According to the 1991 Census, the total population of the country stood at 1,84,91,097 with 92,20,974 males and 92,70,123 females.
During 1981 and 1991 the percentage share of population in mountainous regions decreased by 0.87 percentage points and 4.15 in hill areas. On the other hand the terai experienced growth in the shae of population by 3.02 percentage points. Nepal has a density of population with 126 persons per sq. km (Census 91). The density in the population is lesser in the mountains. A population growth rate of 2.08 percent was recorded per annum during the decade 1981-91.
