Community Based Health and Development Project, Kathmandu, Sindhulpalchok and Kavrepalnchok

After the initial three years social mobilisation and empowerment process in the community of the 2 VDCs namely Nanglebhare and Lapsiphedi and the suggestion/recommendation received through the mid-term participatory evaluation carried out in May 2005. The community have now requested Share and Care to continue the support in facilitating in the capacity strengthening to respond to their basic needs in the area of social, education, health, economical and environmental issues. During the first three years the communities were sensitized and awareness raised and the mid-term evaluation indicates that now they needed support to sustain the development initiatives started by the project, therefore the project proposes to continue the activities in the 2 VDC for the next three years, with the focus on providing the community groups need based support in the issues that the community identify and prioritise. The first two years would be to design and implement need based activities identified by the community groups and the last year, i.e. the third year for the smooth hand over of the development initiatives to the communities and extract the learning for future use.

During the mid-term evaluation process the project has also involved the participation of the community of the adjourning VDC, as a result there was a strong need seen to initiate programme in the communities of 5 new adjourning VDCs. The 5 new expansion VDCs are in the Kavre Palanchowk, Sindhu Palchowk and Kathmandu districts. While implementing the project Share and Care seeks to involve active participation of the communities at all project level i.e. base-line survey, planning (issues identification and prioritisation) programme implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Share and Care will facilitate community members to be sensitive on their own socio-economic issues affecting them, coming into self-help groups to access credit, manage community health care, and improve their livelihood through mobilising the local resources.

The project proposed for the nine VDCs in the three districts are as follows:

Sindhu Palchowk Bhotechaur, Sindhukot, Haibung 3
Kavre Palanchowk Baluwapati Deupur 1
